The aim of this site is to promote a better understanding of Systemic Functional Linguistic theory, mainly by clarifying aspects of the theory and identifying inaccurate renderings of it.
It is only by understanding a theory in its own terms that it can be improved.
The rôle of introducing relevant quotes is not to present "revealed truth" — it is not an "argument from authority" — but rather, to provide a statement of the theory — and often the reasoning behind it — as a baseline from which to proceed.
After all, as Bertrand Russell reminded us:
a stupid man’s report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
